To Tweet or Not to Tweet?

I just created a Twitter account about a month ago.   Twitter was first created in 2006, so I know I am behind the times.  But, from what I can tell as I search for “friends”,  a bunch of you are, too!  So I feel that I am in good company.  I have to say that I resisted using Twitter.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE technology and think it has (mostly) enhanced my life.  But I have this tendency to want to live most of my life away from my technological devices and only part of it virtually.  I also thought it was mostly teenagers and famous people using Twitter. But last fall I spent a day at a conference with Kelly Gallagher, and he mentioned that Twitter has been one of his best...

How Will You Live Your Life Differently? Part 1...

When your students finish reading a book, what is the next thing they are expected to do?  Take an AR quiz? Write a book report? Begin a new book?  Or do they stop to reflect on what they have just read? When I finish reading a book, whether it is memoir, historical fiction, or contemporary fiction, I like to think about this question:  “How will I live my life differently or think about the world differently as a result of reading this book?” This is a great thought-provoking question to ask at the end of a whole class read-aloud or during a conference with a reader who has recently finished a book. Words of Wisdom from Kelly Gallagher...

I know that many of you read my website and blogposts because you have attended one or more of my seminars.  If you have participated in any of my writing seminars, you know how strongly I feel about the use of mentor texts and teacher modeling in our writing instruction.  Yesterday I had the wonderful opportunity to hear someone else preach this message.  I attended a whole day workshop taught by Kelly Gallagher.  The text for the workshop was his newest book Write Like This: Teaching Real-World Writing Through Modeling and Mentor Texts.  I felt like shouting, “Amen!” all day as he reaffirmed this strong belief of mine.
