Set aside time during the day like Morning Meeting or right after lunch for a designated student to read aloud a poem. The student chooses a self-selected poem and practices it for fluency before presenting and explains why the poem was selected. Be sure to keep a supply of poetry collections available. I like to bring in books from the library and rotate them in every few weeks or so to keep up the enthusiasm. This is an informal way for me to introduce my students to the characteristics of free verse poetry before we do a formal writing unit on poetry.
